| High hopes for the first ever Dubuque Sports and Recreation Festival, hosted by Team Dubuque and the Tri-States Sports Look Magazine, were exceeded by about 9:30 a.m. yesterday. Despite the bitter cold, thousands of Dubuquers made their way throughout the day to the sports and fitness related event at the Grand River Center. Kids signed up for team sports and discovered tons of opportunities for activities all year long. Area groups also performed on the main stage, including dance, martial arts and speed cup stacking. Thrown in some heated sports video game action, sports memorabilia and a visit from Chicago Bears legend William "The Refrigerator" Perry to host the Diamond Jo's $100,000 football challenge. A big day ensures we'll see this one back again in 2009. Congratulations to organizer Jay Schiesl, all his volunteers and sponsors who created a great venue to celebrate local athletics.
