Gary Puckett in Concert
Two legends or more took the stage at the Grand Opera House last night as Gary
Puckett of Union Gap fame visited Dubuque for a big night of music
from the 1960's. Opening for Mr. Puckett was Artie and the Pink
Catillacs. The legendary Dubuque based performer, know for his
Elvis show, led
the
band through a set of classic rock anthems. Especially notable
was the keyboard wizardry of Chuck Bregman who had the audience buzzing
during
intermission about his lightning fast chops on the ivory. Then
Gary
Puckett came on with back to back hits, Lady Willpower and I
Guess There's Just
No Getting Over You. His set featured a lot of intentionally bad
jokes and some great stories about his career in the business.
He payed tribute
to some of his friends by covering their songs and finished up
with Woman, Woman and Young Girl. Strong in voice and fun-loving,
Gary
Puckett had
the crowd singing along and put on a long and fulfilling show.
I had the opportunity to chat with him backstage between sets and
also
got
a shot of the two legends (Gary and Artie) together as well. Personally it was fun for me
because I was able to give tickets to my parents for the show.
There picture is in the gallery too somewhere. I was raised on
weekends
of Gary Pucket 8-tracks (Art Garfunkel was in there too sometimes)
while
mom cleaned the house. Though I wasn't born when Gary's hits were
hits, I had a clear recollection of them all from my childhood,
and I think
those who were there that actually remembered the songs when they
were new in 1968 had an even better time. NExt up for promoters,
Music and
More Promotions, is the Diamonds in concert on April 25th at the
Grand Opera House.
