10
minutes and I can't feel my fingers. It wasn't easy to spend
much time outside at the Discovery Center on January 22nd,
especially with a exposed hands and a metal tripod, but we
were determined to get our shots, and we did. Despite the Ice
Harbor seeming to be frozen solid, things are progressing swimmingly
inside the Discovery Center. Work is well underway completing
the infrastructure of the center including running miles of
pipe and wires to power and operate the complex aquarium facility.
Will all rooms framed in and sheet rock going up, it is easier
to get a feel for the final layout of the grand structure.
Many of the permanent exhibits are starting to look very interesting,
especially the aquariums where concrete is being formed around
wire frames to look like real tree stumps and rock. These performed
backgrounds guarantee that the habitat of the marine creatures
will be intact for the life of the facility. Much work has
also been completed outside the building despite the bitter
cold. The educational wetlands are filled in and landscaped
with footing for the walkway that surrounds them in place.
The building also dons a completed façade on many exterior
surfaces. Thick stone slabs compliment copper plating to give
the museum a unique appearance. The train depot cafe next to
the museum is also making great progress sporting new brick
wall and nearly completed roof supports. We're betting work
is concentrated indoors until the cold temperatures of late
January subside.
