The Preview Opening Gala! It's time to get a new dream... because this one has been realized. Hundreds of Dubuquers joined a slew of dignitaries from politicians to hall of fame riverboat captains to celebrate the opening of the Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. At $100 a ticket, the black tie event was also a fundraiser to support the education programs of the Museum in its opening year. It was almost hard to fathom how far the facility came in just the last two days. Many of those celebrating this night in dresses and tuxedos had spent most of the day in work clothes getting everything ready for the night's festivities. In a short presentation portion of the evening, integral partners in the construction of the Museum took turns giving credit where it was deserved from the construction workers to the contributors. Special recognition and a toast was given to Bill Woodward, a Dubuque civic leader and philanthropist who, though no longer with us, left a dream for the future of Dubuque that has now come to fruition at the Port of Dubuque. In the morning, the entire tri-state area is invited to partake in the official grand opening celebration as the doors open on the Museum, and the future of tourism in eastern Iowa.
