10 days and counting... Major exterior work like pouring concrete and delicate indoor work such as preparing exhibits continues hand in hand as the big day looms near. The photos below begin at "The Burlington," the center's reconstructed train depot which will double as a cafe (thus the nacho cheese machine). Out back, area wildlife such as turtles and ducks have already moved in and made the wetlands home. Trees and greenery also take root and give the area a beautiful, tranquil feel. While we were visiting, the massive (52,000 pound) yellow metal cutter was moved by crane into place in the museum's courtyard. This turn of the century device, which is essentially a huge guillotine for sheet metal, was originally an actual tool used at the Dubuque Boat and Boiler Works. In the 70's the device was sold to a company in Prairie DuChien. Now it returns home as a permanent exhibit celebrating the history of the boatyard. Indoors, decorative banners, carpet and more are put in place as exhibits are simultaneously installed throughout the complex. There are also a few shots of fish being placed into their final homes within the Discovery Center. And as the sun set, we got a couple nice shots of the area at dusk. Needless to say, work continues into the evening as the opening day nears. |
