Set in Stone- March 14, 2003 The final three pieces of precast concrete were being placed on the structure as work wrapped up for the day. They'll have to finish tomorrow. With most of the solid walls in place, the clear shape of the Grand River Center is unmistakable. With the structural work nearly complete, work begins in earnest both on the interior of the building as well as in fabricating the buildings stone and glass facade. In the photos below (now with bigger thumbnails!) you can follow the progress yourself as J.P. Cullen and Sons contractors bring the modern marvel to life. Items of note include photos one and two in the second row which give an idea of the size of the main hall where large events will be held. Near the middle of the set, some great images of the bold stonework which creates the columns of the river's edge side of the building detail the grand design elements of the conference center. Also, some images along the floodwall itself show early signs of how the building will work with the wall and tie into convenient rivers edge access points for pedestrians as well as transient boaters. |
