Celebration
The work is completed
and the community gathered under the shadow of the Town Clock to celebrate
the reopening of Main Street on August 2nd, 2002. Project coordinators
were joined by City Personnel, City Council Members, area dignitaries,
and scores of area residents to mark the historic occasion. Following
the cutting, historical cars for the past as well as the newest cars
of the future paraded down the newly opened motor way. Capping the procession
off was on of the largest vehicle in the city arsenal, a giant new fire
truck which was maneuvered through the curve around the base of the
clock to demonstrate how the new street design would not impede traffic
to large vehicles, especially emergency vehicles. Following the parade
of cars, Dubuque365.com hosted another Lunchtime Jam celebration right
under the clock. Ralph Kluseman and Johnny Walker provided the stellar
musical entertainment while Carlos O'Kelly's, Fat Tuesday's, and The
Town Clock Inn prepared the food.
Call it an excuse
to party but we just had to test the physical properties of the newly
constructed Main Street area under the harshest of circumstances. So
we invited a few thousand of our closest friends down to have a "Mini
Jazz" Celebration, if you will. And how did it work??? It was a huge
success. The evening went off without a hitch. People enjoyed great
food from area restaurants and cold beers from the Jaycees at the Main
Street Ltd. sponsored event. See the images below of the first major
event to return to the clock since work was completed as well as images
of the ribbon cutting earlier in the day. Then remember to join us down
there many times every summer for Dubuque's biggest and best festivals.
