Celebrating the history and promoting the future of
Old Main Street in downtown Dubuque.

Taking a cue from the success of last year’s Main Event, committee members and organizers are making plans to deepen the celebration of the Dubuque area’s rich history. Old shares the spotlight with the new as recent development in the Old Main neighborhood continues to draw attention and generate excitement.

Dubuque’s Main Event - scheduled for Saturday, June 4, 2004, Noon to 9 p.m. – will begin an hour earlier than past events to allow even more time to experience “this fun and educational event celebrating the rich heritage of the Dubuque area.” The seventh annual festival will be held in the Historic Old Main District (from 2nd Street to the cul-de-sac) and Flatiron Park with a parade of historic modes of transportation stretching from Jackson Park down Main Street to the festival site.

The Main Event features entertainment for all ages, including LT Amusements’ inflatable rides (ride bracelets will be available for $12), kids’ games and a wide variety of traditional Dubuque festival foods.

Flatiron Park, the oldest platted park in Iowa, situated on South Main Street, will again be the location of historical artisans demonstrating the traditional crafts of an earlier time. One of the more popular features of past events, the park features basket weavers, blacksmiths, spinners, weavers, rug-hookers, quilt-makers, leatherworkers, lacemakers, chair-caners, potters and flint arrowhead makers.

No festival is complete without live entertainment, and Dubuque’s Main Event fills the bill with a full slate of performers. At the main stage, located on First Street at the corner near Main, beginning at noon, great live music will take the stage all day.

The Main Event began in 1999 to give Dubuquers a chance to enjoy the Historic Old Main area and to offer them a variety of activities, entertainment, and food. Event organizers envision a historical festival that will not only create a deeper understanding of our history and our ancestry, by providing an event where the stories of Dubuque can be told and heard by people of all ages, but that will also promote a sense of community. The further hope is to appeal to a wider geographic area, inviting residents and visitors alike and cultivating a positive image that Dubuque is a growing city with first class shopping and entertainment.

Major cash sponsors for the Main Event are: the Diamond Jo Casino; Alliant Energy; Premier Bank; and Richardson Buick, Cadillac, Honda, GMC Truck.

Other sponsors include The stations of Radio Dubuque (97.3 KRGG, 92.9 KAT-FM, 1370 KDTH, 101.1 The River), A&W, Becwar Tile, Bricktown, Brownstone Gallery, Café Manna Jave, Canvas Product Co., Capri College, Dave’s Downtown Conoco, Dempsey’s, Dubuque Discount Gas, Fried Green Tomatoes/Grape Escape, Flowers on Main, Funtime Costumes, Grand Opera House, Hennagir’s Hallmark, Herbst Upholstery, the Holiday Inn, Knipple’s, Mario’s Restaurant, McCoy Jewelers, The Meadows, Mercy Housing, My Backyard, Nearly New Boutique, Olde Time Shoppe, Pets Western, Pinnacle Cellular, Plane Art Design, Rite Hite Corp., River City Gifts, Town Clock Inn, Three Mile House, Tranquil Journey, Tri State Blueprint, Walker’s Shoes, and Dubuque365.com.
